While remodeling a 30-year-old Montana farmhouse, Kylee Shintaffer enlisted the help of eclectic decor elements—including patterned rugs, woven baskets, a carpentry style known as hobo art and arrowheads, to name a few—”to create the sense of authenticity that instills The house around.
The end result is a dwelling completely contrary to its original form – which was “too modest and lacking in character,” reveals Shintaffer. She collaborated with an architect to “rework the spaces and introduce materials that make the house more in harmony with its exterior surroundings.” As such, glulam beams are sheathed with reclaimed hand-hewn timber, while reclaimed wood has been added throughout the house to provide character and warmth.
The Twin Bridges home is designed to be used primarily in the fall and spring – the perfect time to enjoy the stunning views of the river and two covered porches. So it’s only fitting that the interior’s color palette reflects the foliage that surrounds the house during fall, punctuated by pops of vibrant green reminiscent of the buds of spring.

“We wanted the screened porch to have the same sense of comfort and layer as the interior rooms, so we used a mix of woven furniture, antique tables, and lamps, along with horse blankets and tapestries,” explains Shintaffer. She adds that the colors of the fabrics and textiles “reflect the colors of the grass and foliage along the river,” allowing for a matching elegant moment.

Living room

“The living room embodies the spirit of the home and the possessions it sits on,” Shanfer says. In this particular space, the original hearth was removed and replaced with local moss, while hand-hewn timbers were added to the walls and ceiling. Plus, the original windows here have been replaced, and an eclectic mix of antiques, a woven patchwork rug, and organic accessories add warmth and comfort to this space.

“The basic bedroom leans on the idea of using primitive craftsmanship in a new way,” says Shintaffer. Here, the designer incorporated a knotted rug, which was made using a traditional weave technique, while its geometric pattern “adds a sense of modernity.”
Above the console near the bed is a large collection of arrowheads that Shintaffer sourced from the surroundings and put them in bold geometric patterns.
