Four One Nine by Síol Studios blends creativity, nature, light and social purpose
A new creative hub for San Francisco, Four One Nine from Síol Studios ambitiously combines artistic presentation, product development and digital content production. The brainchild of business coach, creative director and photographer Sonya Yu, Four One Nine is designed to meet the needs of the creative community as a place to serve local talent and create positive change; Its interior and interior design, carefully designed by the Síol team, reflect these values through openness, green elements and bright, welcoming and flexible spaces.
Síol Studios, co-founded by Jessica Wigley and Kevin Hackett, has been guided by functionality and versatility in the design. The large, colonnaded gallery provides a multifunctional space for shows and events, while the small and functional kitchen serves as the venue’s food preparation location as well as a photoshoot. Offices and meeting rooms flow around these spaces in a largely open plan arrangement with a dramatic staircase at its heart (built in collaboration with steelmaker Henry DeFauw and concrete mill Concrete Works), which has become a true centerpiece of the overall interior architecture.
A strong green element defines the design. A planted wall (including a flourishing beehive) designed by Habitat Horticulture, the company behind SFMOMA’s greenery, gently dominates the balcony area and remains visible from the inside through large windows. Outdoor furniture, water features, and landscaping help complete a rich outdoor experience for users – an experience that also seeps into the interior, thanks to strategically planned vistas.
Art, such as Dave Muller’s colorful murals, blends with tactile natural materials—white ash wood, 3D tiles, and Caesarstone worktops—to deliver a multi-layered interior experience. Meanwhile, custom elements ensure that every part of the space is fully fit for purpose.
While the interior is protected from unwanted noise pollution, it is intimately connected to the world around it. Throughout the interior, massive, carefully placed skylights flood the space with light and create a deep connection between Four One Nine and the changing weather, cloud cover and intensity of the sun, all of which register on the interior walls, says the design team. §
