Quad Act introduced a few blue-chip furnishings and fittings to this high-rise apartment, which was renovated by a design studio in the Indian city of Thane.
Cobalt accents create a vibrant contrast within the neutral 101 square meter home, which is shared by a middle-aged couple, their two daughters, and a pet cat.
The Mumbai-based Act of Quad made a few structural changes to the apartment during the renovation, tearing down a wall in the entrance to make the dining area appear larger and expanding the third bedroom with the help of a convex partition.
Several sharp corners were rounded off near the ceiling, which the studio said helps “soften the severity” of the existing architecture.
Act of Quad created a number of furnishings customized for the space, including a three-legged dining table covered in quartz, a gray L-shaped sofa, and a hammock that hung in front of the apartment’s spacious windows, allowing the residents to sit and sit. Swing while enjoying the city views.
The interior is decked out in cobalt blue accents, ranging from a tubular pendant lamp in the living room to the laminate lining the arched wine cabinet in the corner.
Nearby, one of the chairs features blue piping around the seat cushion and a matching arched backrest.
“When we first suggested cobalt to our clients, they thought it wasn’t the color of the house,” explained Priyanka Itadkar and Falgoni Bhatia, who lead The Act of Quad. To them, it seemed very surprising.
“Now, our customers say they can’t imagine any other color in their home,” the duo added.
Blue reappears in the youngest daughter’s bedroom, where cobalt-color paint covers a thin wall rail.
Two back cushions are suspended from the horizontal bar, allowing the adjoining bed to double as a sofa during the day.
A comfortable blue cubicle for the cat is incorporated into the room’s wardrobe and an engineering chair made from on-site waste tucked under the desk.
The other bedroom, belonging to the older sister, is largely dominated by pure white surfaces.
But room for a small workbench is rendered in peachy pink, along with orbs mounted on the outside of the dresser for holding coats or bags.
The studio created a slightly warmer feel in the parents’ bedroom, which was designed to evoke the wood-lined hotel suites the couple used to frequent during their North Indian holidays.
Birch plywood is used to make the floor-to-ceiling storage units as well as the bed frame and headboard, while the surfaces in the en suite bathroom are clad in herringbone brown.
The family’s basic bathroom is covered in cobalt blue tiles and has a large, organic-shaped mirror mounted above the sink.
The Act of Quad completed another residential project in India just last year, in which the studio combined two apartments in Mumbai to form a ‘simple yet playful’ home for three generations.
