Colors are reflections of life. They can calm the soul, inspire the mind, revitalize our thoughts, or bring peace to our private sanctuary.
Each year, the Pantone color organization and a variety of paint manufacturers choose a color or color palette that will become their overall color. For 2022, Pantone has created a new color for the first time in the history of the Pantone Color of the Year: Pantone 17-3938 in BerryA dynamic new shade of ocean blue with a red-violet undertone. The color blends the sincerity of blue with the energy and excitement of red in a fresh and intimidating hue.
Benjamin Moore makes an annual color selection based on relevance and long-lasting appeal, considering everything from furniture to fabric. The world of art and fashion also plays a role in the color equation. For 2022, Benjamin Moore chose October Fog 1495, a botanical shade of green, along with a matching color palette of warm earthy tones and updated primary colors.

“There’s a freshness to the color. It’s just a little bit brighter,” she says, adding that these greens aren’t the old, golden avocados that were plentiful in the ’60s. “We continue to bring the exterior into the interior with evergreens such as aqua green, as well as emerald green. They help expand space and wise perception.”
The natural look of green pairs well with wood tones. “There are hints of brightness,” says Theophanos. “You can use yellow, blush, and coral for emphasis.”
Farrow & Ball continues the path with Five colors for 2022 which reflects comfort, function and simplicity: babouche, cheerful yellow; The White House School; green breakfast room; Blue stone and Incarnadine, classic cochineal.
Choose Sherwin Williams Evergreen Fog SW 9130, a gentle gray-green, while Glidden went with a refreshing green shade called Guacamole PPG1121-5. On the other hand, he chose Behr Breezway MQ3-21A bluish green that mimics the colors of the ocean.
For a long time, homeowners have been reluctant to commit to color, but more and more, people are feeling comfortable making what Theophanos calls “bold choices. If it’s a bold color on the cabinets, it can give it character.”
But if you find out you don’t like it, “you can always change the paint,” she adds. The good news with this annual color prediction is that most picks perform well in everything from traditional to modern design schemes.
Switching up the colors in your home can give your home a whole new look and feel. “It’s fun to play with color in this way,” says Theophanos.
