family house – The transformation of the family home consists in introducing an artist residency program that gives them the opportunity to live and work outside their usual environment, giving them time to think, research and produce work.
Context – The property is composed of a variety of adjacent buildings. Canon businesses are on Main Street, while Barn Saylom Loft Apartments are at the rear of the site, adjacent to the family home. A small distribution alley leads to a dead end to the site. The current building has a strong identity characterized by its regular and uniform three-dimensional structure, and the main balcony facade composed of breezy blocks that characterizes the colonial era. The interior spaces are isolated from the outside world at the expense of the concept of comfort.
Project Description – The vision of the project proposes Miz en Abiim. Inside the family home, there is a small house with a garden. The intervention in the existing building is to free up the spaces. Trim the internal volume both horizontally and vertically. The void on three floors allows wind and natural light to penetrate into the core of the building and illuminate the existing structure and facade. A new landscape was born.
The entrance to the new family home opens onto the new garden, which consists of a central gravel yard and longitudinal steps. Hall, seating arrangement where the audience faces the urban landscape, the existing building rises to form theatrical decor and as theme, romanticizing the post-colonial ruin. The entire ground floor is suitable for events. Under the steps, the kitchen as a living room becomes the central center of the gatherings. Starting from the plaza and continuing the steps to the second floor, the open art gallery opens onto the urban landscape and the inner garden. In addition, the art gallery turned into a private space with its division, and thus became a studio apartment.
A wooden cocoon defines the gallery and the water room. The volume is cut horizontally with precision 360 degrees with a view of a secret garden overlooking the sky. Filled with water, it is a space that, every day, gives Rendez-Vous to the sun at sharp noon for a shower of light. Empty, the cocoon turns into a library, lounge, or just a space for imagination.
mutant – A reinterpretation of family heritage suggests a personal reflection on the process of social transformation and lifestyle. The composition of open and closed spaces generates a new dynamic between the world of the past and the world of today. It is a dialogue between generations translated into materials and spaces. The intervention is an opportunity to recreate the interaction between the surrounding buildings. By redesigning spatial relations, the goal is to restore the symbolic and original role of the family home in the center of the property as a place of life, reception and welcome. It is also a multifunctional open space, a semi-public space to encourage meetings and exchanges and thus promote social and cultural activities.
