country house
Farmhouse can refer to function and location more than a specific style. However, typical farmhouses share many design elements from the 19th century. What sets them apart is the casual and informal look and feel.
Traditionally built in rural areas, the farmhouse is gaining popularity across the states due to large balconies and distinctive designs that separate formal and informal spaces.
Tudor
Tudor homes are named after the family that ruled Great Britain during the 15th and 16th centuries. It looks medieval, thanks to the distinctive half-timbers used to decorate the exterior walls.
Tudors also had steep roofs, large chimneys, ornate doorways, and exteriors made of brick, stone, or stucco. These houses originated in England in the 1890s, and are still popular today. Many design features common to Tudor homes prevent wet and cold climates.
Literal
The Craftsman-style home is a beautiful reaction to the Industrial Revolution in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. People started craving for unique, handmade decor when mass production took over the manufacturing process.
Homes emphasize the use of natural materials such as wood and stone. Although a craftsman-style home can be of any size or shape, it tends to have open floor plans, large fireplaces, exposed beams, and built-in furniture like cupboards, drawers, and shelves.
contemporary
The word “contemporary” means “belonging to the present.” Contemporary and modern architecture are often confused, but they are decades apart. Contemporary refers to existing building styles and can refer to many forms. “Modern” refers to styles from the late 1940s to the early 1960s.
The latest contemporary homes feature elegant and clean designs with large windows and open spaces. These high-performance homes tend to emphasize sustainability, energy efficiency, and the use of non-toxic, recycled materials.
mid modern century
These homes were built in the aftermath of World War II. The war brought new materials, such as steel and plywood, to the forefront of architecture and design. This made this streamlined, flowing design possible.
Mid-century modern homes use flat planes, large glass windows, and open spaces to incorporate nature into the design. These building components allow homes to be lighter and more airy, with thinner walls and slimmer beams. It is popular in temperate regions of the country.
Mediterranean sea
This home style enjoys freshness today. The Mediterranean refers to the coastal hacienda-style homes in Italy, France, and Spain, and includes a central courtyard.
Mediterranean homes feature balconies, heavy wooden doors, multi-colored tiles, and exposed wooden beams. Their purpose is to create a flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. That’s because homeowners in warmer climates have greater opportunities to open their homes.
Farm
The farmhouse design emerged from rural western farms in the United States. They are functional one-story buildings with attached garage. Since they only have one floor, these homes can span, and work best in larger spaces.
Since they require more land, these designs are most common in the Southwest. However, they have spread all over the country. Farm homes are cheaper to build, and many were built after World War II for soldiers returning home. The typical farmhouse is asymmetrical with a low pitched roof and simple floor plan.
victorian
Queen Victoria ruled England at the time this style appeared, and therefore it is named after her. Victorian homes began appearing in the United States during the housing boom brought on by the Industrial Revolution in the late 19th century, following the Civil War.
These houses are heavily decorated with elaborate facades and interiors. It features many colorful details, rich textures, large windows, full front porches and gables.
Townhouse
Cottages are mostly found in urban areas, and became popular in the early 19th century when cities filled up and land was scarce. Homes built in this way can be built quickly and affordably on less space.
Whether you call them homes or townhouses, these dwellings usually have multiple floors. The original homes are highly desirable, due to their historical value and central locations. For example, the Beacon Hill area of Boston is known for its beauty and homes.
Southwest
Southwestern style homes originated from a part of the United States where land is abundant, much of it large and the weather is warm and dry. These home designs incorporate Native Spanish and American design.
Southwestern homes feature a terracotta roof, arched walkways, square columns, and exterior stucco. Porches keep the home cool in the hot sun, and patios, verandas, and patios enable homeowners to take advantage of the cozy warm weather.

Cape Cod
