Finally, the Airstream has gone electric with two newly announced EV concepts, the eStream and Thor Vision Vehicle. Developed in close quarters with European subsidiary Erwin Hymer Group and technology company ZF, the eStream trailer addresses the lingering issue with most campers and RVs – namely the need for additional power which in turn limits the vehicles towing range.
Whether the eStream is connected to a pure electric vehicle like a Tesla Model 3 or a Ford Escape hybrid – the trailer from Thor Industries (Airstream’s parent company) isn’t just a heavyweight. This is done using dual independent motors and two lithium-ion battery packs on board. Thor’s advanced electrical engineering brings renewable braking power to the fore as the motors can be used to apply torque to the wheels in both directions.
One thing to consider here, though, is that the eStream weighs more than conventional trailers — so, how much of the electric power boost has been neutered, must also be taken into account. The trailer can also be remotely started via an app when separated from the trailer. Therefore, you can put it back at the campsite or take it down to attach to a vehicle. The modern travel trailer comes with solar panels for off-grid camping on long adventures. Inside, it’s loaded with things like audio, touchscreen, and lighting controls.
The other is the Thor Vision Vehicle which is a Ford Transit-based motorhome with a range of 300 miles. This RV comes with a very high tech digital cockpit and you have extensive tools to find chargers on your way to the next destination. Inside, everything looks cheerful in terms of a comfortable road trip and a comfortable night’s sleep.
At the moment, the two cars are still in the concept stage, and it is also uncertain whether or not they will make it to production lines. I think that both are very practical and satisfy users’ needs will someday make it a reality – of course with a supposedly high price tag. Especially the eStream system that provides towing capabilities for vehicles you wouldn’t normally even think of loading the job with. A game-changing feature in the trailer industry and other related fields.
