The Orléans Health Hub, a new 90,000 square foot community hospital in Ontario, Canada, opened in October 2021 in the eastern Ottawa suburb of Orleans. Designed by HDR (Kingston-Ottawa, Canada), the health center is comprised of seven distinct healthcare and community organizations, integrating wellness, case management, and specialized outpatient services.
The Orléans Health Hub is designed to be a one-stop health store. With community support programs such as counseling and retail focused on health and wellness also under one roof, the design simplifies the offerings for local residents and patients with multiple chronic diseases.
While the center’s collaborative approach suggests a new way to provide primary and secondary health care, its unique location encourages a reconnection with the natural world. Located near the Ottawa River and Petrie Island, the project is inspired by nature from the outside in.
For example, the natural canals of the Petri Islet have reported the development of the internal spine as an essential regulatory component of the axon. A system of trails connects to neighboring neighbourhoods, inviting patients and the community to enjoy outdoor recreation. The reintroduction of tall grass lawns and native vegetation will re-naturalize the landscape to provide a respite among the growing suburban area. Exterior wood cladding, overall structural wood, crafted log walkways, and a living green wall are examples of the choice of contextually relevant materials.
The Orléans Health Hub is a partnership between Bruyère, Youth Services Ottawa, Children’s Hospital Eastern Ontario, Eastern Ottawa Resource Center, Hôpital Montfort, ParaMed, Ottawa Public Health, Geronto-Psychiatry Community Services in Ottawa, and Care Support Services Household and Community Champlain.
