Built in 1972, the home has three bedrooms and two bathrooms, and had a budget of $100,000 for renovations.
Joshua and Madison explained that there were a few things they either didn’t like or didn’t like about the house, starting with the outside hallway and the “ugly” brickwork. The couple also wanted the house to be more dog friendly and to provide more space to entertain friends.
Jenny and Dave are no stranger to the couple either – they’ve previously done a major renovation of Madison’s parents’ home, so she wanted them to recreate that charm in their new place.

The “to-do list” for the house began as soon as the four stood at the front. He started by repositioning the front door to make it in the middle, adding a front porch and potentially replacing the roof.
From the start, Jenny said the house’s biggest problem was its lack of personality and her job was to add fun and unique elements to it.
As they moved inside Jenny and Dave, they noticed that the floors had shifted from tiles to the floorboards between the kitchen and dining area, which needed replacing. They also suggested opening the wall between the living room and the kitchen area, to let in more light and give a more open plan feel.
With no physical pantry in the kitchen, it was clearly needed to be taken into account in the design. The other space they wanted to renovate was the master bedroom and give the room a bit more size as well.

The only other area of the house that Madison and Joshua wanted to work in was the backyard, although knowing their budget wouldn’t be possible.
That was until disaster struck and the backyard filled up with water after a night of heavy rain, and Dave knew they had to do something to fix it.
Madison’s father called a meeting with the makeover duo to share his idea of adding something special to the project as a wedding gift for his daughter.
After Dave filled him in with backyard issues, they worked out a super-secret plan to solve drainage issues and create an outdoor entertaining space for the young couple.
Dave had some big plans up his sleeve to turn the backyard into a stunning feature of the house, including a barbecue space, hammocks attached to the rafters in the canopy over the deck and a giant table for dinner with friends that has doubled as a ping-pong table.
While he had a lot of ideas for the house, Jenny had a few of her own, too.
The best idea is one that every dog owner will want to steal in order to renovate their homes. One detail Jenny wanted to include was a small cubby by the edge of the bench seat in the kitchen, where the couple could pull out a hidden drawer with dog food and a water bowl for their river dog.
The river was also taken into account when they built a custom bed for the couple. It featured a pull-out roll with dog bed, which can be tucked away during the day.
When it finally came time for the couple to see their newly renovated home, they were utterly devastated.
A new kitchen combined with a pantry was not something either of them thought possible, along with a more open design.
Dave used some clever tweaks like creating a feature wall in the bedroom with wood and wood accents to turn it into a standout, which didn’t hurt her budget.
But the big wow factor came when Madison and Joshua discovered their backyard, which was never part of the original plan. With plenty of room to entertain friends and family, the couple were impressed with what was done.
