The 60-unit complex recognized for design excellence as the first affordable residential community in Palm Springs in over a decade

Maria Song, AIA LEED AP, received Honorable Mention from International Design Awards for the design of The Monarch Apartment Homes, an affordable 60-unit residential community currently under development by Community Housing Opportunities Corporation (CHOC). The award emphasizes the critical role of design in nature in the development and creation of affordable housing. The first affordable housing complex to open in the area in more than a decade, due for completion in January 2023.

The complex, which opened last October, is located on a 3.62-acre vacant lot in the southeast corner of the N. Indian Canyon and San Rafael Drive in the Upper Westside One Palm Springs area. In partnership with the city, the rental apartments consist of one, two and three bedrooms. All units will have balconies or patios with a community building for a computer classroom, rental desk, and a community lounge that can be used for group functions. Amenities include a Monarch splash pillow next to the children’s play area, as well as two barbecue areas.
