Architectural style of mixed-use urban house – In recent years, the rapid rise in real estate prices and economic development along with the increasing demand for rental shops and apartments have made urban mixed-use homes more and more popular in Vietnam’s major cities. This architectural style requires highly effective design solutions in terms of business model and program, as well as unique characteristics that respond to context and fit in with the lifestyle of the occupants.
A 6-storey detached house located on an 80 square meter plot on the main street of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam is a typical example of urban mixed-use urban house architectural style in Vietnam cities. The building is designed to include a variety of different uses inside, including common and service spaces; A small commercial space and 6 fully furnished studios for rent on the 3 lower floors with a two-bedroom owner’s home on the upper two floors.
The home is an organic ecosystem – The design concept is inspired by the formation of a growing tree. The root of the tree resembles the foundation of the building with a depth of 25 meters, the lower part of the trunk expands with the shop and the entrance, the studios build the tree trunk with cantilevered balconies just as leafy as tree branches, and the large tree canopy on the upper part imaginable consists of a double height pergola and the large porches of the owner’s house, This is also the focal point of the overall architectural form.
In this unique tree house, the tenants give a stable income to the owner, the owner warmly welcomes and supports the tenants every day. Everyone enjoys privacy and independence while staying in their space, they take full care of the common spaces, they ensure safety and security, and they enjoy living together under one roof. Its occupants create a closely related and supportive community just like an organic ecosystem that is harmonious and diverse in nature.
Architecture related to nature The floor plans are designed so that the circulation core is in the center and the habitable spaces are in the front and rear. A 3.5 meter high bounce forms a courtyard in the front, and a bicycle and bicycle parking area is located in the back, adjacent to the backyard. Front and back voids provide adequate natural ventilation and daylight in the rooms. Rustic and nature-friendly materials such as exposed concrete ceilings and terrazzo floors blend harmoniously with recyclable wood joinery and glass.
The facade consists of curvy walls finished with a sand-washed paint that effectively reflects sound and reduces noise from the busy street, and is also visually bound to the edges of the tree bark. Various landscaped spaces are laid out throughout the facade in the form of planters and balconies. The two upper levels are connected by lush gardens and a pergola covered with vines that reduces direct sunlight. From there, a spiral staircase leads to a secret rooftop garden with a panoramic view of the city. All these design elements create a vital relationship between architecture and nature.
