“The bathroom is one of the most expensive rooms in the house to be created, so it’s important to buy products that will stand the test of time, both from a style standpoint and from a functional standpoint,” says James Lentaigne, Drummonds creative director.
“Spend on key pieces, which will create the overall look of the room and allocate as much space as possible because this creates an extravagant feel.”
The first thing to understand when it comes to shower room ideas is that you don’t need as much space as you think. As long as you have 36″ x 36″, you can fit a walk-in shower in your home. Katie Agumbar, designer at West One Bathroom, recently completed a small bathroom—and was able to include a freestanding bathtub as well—and she has plenty of advice to give about the process.
“The entire floor needs a tank to prevent leakage,” Katie says. “Then the area around the shower should be tiled, and then a discreet drain was added to make it a completely functional area.” Katie left the shower head in the ceiling so it takes up less space, and feels streamlined, sleek, and even zen. With the goal of having a walk-in shower in a compact space, designer Katie Agumbar of West One Bathrooms knew she had to use some design tricks and small bathroom tile ideas.
“The starting point was to cover the far wall, opposite the entrance door, with dramatically ribbed black marble tiles to draw the eye along the room and give effect to the new shower area,” Katie says. The floor is completely stocked for waterproofing, then tiled, and finished with a quay drain below the marble wall, turning it into a completely functional area. A bronze stained-glass panel prevents water splashing onto the adjacent vanity area, and limits shower space without cramping the room. The rain shower head is mounted to the ceiling for a streamlined look.

“We recommend choosing a material you love, rather than following a certain trend, and marble is a true classic,” says Lee Thornly, founder of Bert & May.

“To avoid the cost of tiling the walls, install simple planks,” says James Lentaigne, creative director of Drummonds.
