News leadership: Tom Rosen, owner of the beloved Rosen’s Bagel bakery, opened a brick-and-mortar location in North Burnet, just out of the field, Thursday.
what are they saying: “There is something special, borderline magic, about eating bread that just came out of the oven,” Rosen says. “Seeing steam escaping from the buns as they are sliced open adds to that element of admiration, and the bricks and mortar allows us to share that experience with our customers.”
With subway tiles and baking screens, the space designed by Lillian Steckle Interior Design (Peter Huff, Austin Eastkids Barton Springs and Birdcage Biscuits) aims to recreate the New York bakery experience— But less… he lived in.
aside: Asher grew up on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, in the heart of Paglandia, where white chimera was as popular as buttermilk in Austin.
- A 10-minute walk from his apartment was H&H, Zabar’s, and Barney Greengrass, King of Sturgeon.
- Asher exploded with pride when the late Moe Greengrass used to sell his father bread for debt. “I know where you live,” Mo used to joke.
- to sign up: There was no lemon-roasted jalapeño cheddar or scallion scallion bread—both of which are on sale at Rosen’s Texas covered store.
From the note: Asher’s dog is called poppy, as is poppy.
pro type, Learned from Asher’s father: Save the offal from everything and mix it with your scrambled eggs, and sprinkle it on your fish– Or even, if you’re daring, add it to your oatmeal.
Nicole’s Thought Bubble: She didn’t stop at Rosen’s new location, but the company’s package of plain bread became one of her favorite grocery picks when she was splurge on Whole Foods last year.
