Tour this architect-designed Victorian home packed with clever ideas

When architect Tom Rutt of TR Studio was contacted about updating the Chelsea Victorian balcony, he knew the space was very promising. The perfectly designed West London pillow now had a brief to follow, and it would take some work to get it there.

The five storey balcony had great “bones” and plenty of space. However, it has been changed over the years resulting in a mixture of disjointed spaces. With some strategic structural changes, Tom knew the space could change.

The project

“Every component was fun to work on,” says Tom. “In particular, we loved seeing the new kitchen extension ideas come to life. Only two walls were removed but it became a really light and airy space that is the heart of the new home.

The double height space in the main staircase with its curved wall creates a moody and atmospheric space. Helped by decorative terracotta walls and lighting, interior designers Riley Brooks Studio and contractor Q Projects have been invaluable in the project’s success.

Due to the levels of floors in the main house and the side back, it was difficult to come up with staircase ideas that would help with the flow of the house. Tom says about the challenges he and the rest of the team at TR Studio faced with this project:

“We removed the existing stair structure,” Tom recalls. “And we carefully designed the landing half so that they are more comfortable.”

Living room

“Ultimately it comes down to the living spaces spread across the two basements,” Tom says. “This is the heart of the home where the kitchen takes center stage and you feel connected to the garden.”

The chalky earthy color palette works well with living room ideas. “It was about creating a shelter,” Tom says. Balancing being in an urban environment with the need for calm and softness that is often lacking in London interiors.

A specialized terracotta wall covering has been applied to give the property a relaxing atmosphere. Tom notes that “the textured mud walls in all the main rooms beside the main staircase help connect the spaces vertically.”

“We used many different trims and some subtle details on this house,” says Tom. “Not in an old-fashioned Chelsea fashion but in a very clean and modern way. With a calm tone as opposed to a strong style.

“We used cross-sawn oak veneer on most of the woodworking, with satin brass accents and fluted wood joinery pieces,” says Tom.

Playing with clever bedroom ideas, Tom gave the sleeping space a cocoon-like feel. This was achieved by hanging a linen curtain along a sloping pole to create the effect of a canopy.

Natural stone adds warmth and depth in both the kitchen and master en suite bathroom. Basement design details, oak sawn wood cabinets, brass fittings, and volakas marble reflect comfortable and elegant bathroom ideas.
