No outdoor scene—the campfire setting, cozy porch, lakeside backyard, and grassy front lawn—is complete without a copy of the Adirondack chair. The iconic piece of furniture is practically synonymous with total relaxation in nature. After all, it is named after a mountain range. While the chair has evolved into many variations today, we have origins dating back over a century ago to thank for today’s popular designs.
The Adirondack chair was first conceived in the early 20th century Thomas Lee At his family’s cottage in Westport, New York. Furniture and history buffs agree: Lee, a lover of the outdoors, wanted to create a sturdy, comfortable chair that could handle the terrain in the Adirondacks—from soft, mushy ground to a small hill. From 1900 to 1903, Lee asked members of his family to test prototypes. In the end, he landed on a chair With a high back, wide armrests, and a reclining seat made of knot-free planks of oriental hemlock.
Now, it wasn’t Lee who made the chair. In an interview with Sun community newsAnd Lee’s nephew asserted that the inventor had no interest in doing so because he was already wealthy and had other business to focus on. Instead, he encouraged his friend and local carpenter Henry Bonnell to take up the project. Bonnell applied for a Westport chair patent (early seat name) –design modification A little by making it narrower – in 1904.
In the years that followed, other inventors put their reins to the chair, including Irving Woolpin in 1938. In 1990, the company Bollywood I started making Adirondack chairs out of recycled plastics – which made them highly weatherproof.
Today, the modern Adirondack chair often features padded slats of wood rather than the original design, which used whole pieces of wood. This method makes manufacturing much easier. You can now find plenty of variations in the price point range as well.
