Calgary designers embraced winter in their efforts to make Stephen Street a more welcoming place during our colder months as they saw their ideas come true. It’s one of the ways we’re investing in and reimagining downtown Calgary to support it as a place to visit and stay year-round.
Today, the City of Calgary is excited to announce the winners of its inaugural Winter City Design Competition, who will receive funding to build and install their designs along Stephen Street:
“endless” – Lighted tunnel focusing on intimacy, communication and social interactions
Project Team – Bosco Chik, Charlie Jiang, Christian Icuspit, William Zhuang, Karim Kandi
“Wow” – An accessible, interactive experience to make winter even warmer, designed with kids in mind
Project Team – Seton Nastead, Julian Waring, Kelsey Hurlbutt, Adam Ford, John Lawlor, Matt LaBrie
“Infinito” will be located on Stephen Street and 2 Street SW “Wowie” will be constructed at Stephen Avenue and Center Street S. Each winning project will receive $10,000 to build and install their design along Stephen Street in February 2022.
“The two winning designs will offer something new and exciting to bring Stephen Avenue to life during the cooler months,” said Kate Zago, who leads the city’s winter design competition. “We are very excited to bring these designs to life in February, and to create two new wonderful public spaces for the residents of Calgary to experience.”

The Winter City Design Competition is a partnership between The City and the University of Calgary’s School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape to imagine the possibilities of engaging and interactive displays along Stephen Street. The aim of the competition is to explore and push beyond the boundaries of what public spaces look like in the midst of a Calgary winter.
The competition is part of the city’s Revitalization + Experience The Future of Stephen Avenue project, to reimagine Stephen Avenue from City Hall to Mewata Armory. This project tests ideas, experiments, and measures impacts, to help inform the future of downtown’s iconic Main Street.
