Huahai Homestay Transformation in Daijin Village / DUS Studio

Text description provided by the architects. Located in Jinshan District, Shanghai, Daijin Village is a typical waterside village in the south of the Yangtze River. For generations, local villagers lived near the water and made a living from fishing and farming. With the construction of the nearby Huakai Haishang Ecological Park, local life has also gradually changed. The growing number of tourists has called for new types of tourism. It was difficult for the traditional forms of agriculture to satisfy the demands of the tourists from the cities. For this reason, creating a model and model for new forms of home stay to promote the industrial upgrading of the surrounding peasants became the reason for Huahai to stay with a host family. How the 1,000 mu-high Sea of Flowers fits into the waterside village south of the Yangtze River is the entry point for this project.
In all, we retained the one story on the north side and three stories on the south side of the original dwellings, as well as the structure of the courtyards on the north and the halls on the south. Besides, in accordance with local policies, we have redesigned the planar posts without distorting the original outlines of the building roofs. Huahai in the northern part is the primary aspect of the landscape. Its main purpose is to serve as the transition to the guest rooms on the second and third floors. Large windows have been installed to allow a view of the sea of flowers in the rooms. External stairs are the most vital visual elements of the entire home residence premises. They connect different types of landscape spaces. Walk the stairs to the third floor and you can admire the sea of flowers and waterside views.
How can this residence show its own styles and features? Architecture should be considered as an independent existence in the entire environment. Instead, it should shoot out from the surroundings from a distance. This is my original design intention. Because this residence building plays a leading role in the transformation of the property in Daijin Village. We do not want to cause any serious impact on the basic patterns and features of the waterside landscapes in the south of the Yangtze River.
Therefore, the basic principle is to continue the main idea of the white walls and black tiles in the waterside residences. On this basis, we extracted the curved line of the petals to achieve penetrations in the curtains between stairs, rest space and architectural windows. In this way, heterogeneous shapes are included in the overall scene to induce visual effects and memory points.
Besides, on a deck facing the sea of flowers, colorful metal tiles are decorated. In this way, it appears as if the petals are on the surface, so the colors inside the courtyards are rich. Waterside cities in the south of the Yangtze River and the Sea of Flowers in all seasons, the combination of the two cultural features provide the unique character of home stay. We hope this simple attempt will add more beauty to Daijin Village.
