Razer is no stranger to CES wild prototyping, and CES 2022 is no exception: The company has unveiled its new Project Sophia concept, which aims to build a complete modular desktop computer in an office-like setting. Star Trek The LCARS console comes to life.
Razer had modular computing aspirations before. There was Christine’s 2014 project, a precursor to Sophia’s project that imagined an office tower built from easily interchangeable Jenga-like bricks. Tomahawk 2020 has taken a more hands-on approach to this concept, based on Intel’s Element NUC designs.
But Project Sophia appears to have shifted Razer’s conceptual leanings to the 11. The desk is designed to include 13 different interchangeable console slots, where users can add a wide range of different widgets: temperature readouts, touchscreen app launchers, custom chat views and a calendar , wireless Qi chargers, cup heaters, pen drives, audio mixers, CPU and GPU monitors, and more. Razer envisions the modular nature of its computer desk that will allow users to customize it according to their own needs and use cases. A streaming device, for example, could be able to capture more powerful speakers, microphones, and cameras for broadcasting, with additional screens to monitor their followers’ conversations, while a video editor could add audio mixing and editing units to focus on the work.
For the actual “PC” part, the Razer concept imagines that embedded in the office as well, in a custom-designed, magnetically attacked chassis that can be removed easily so users can swap parts when they get a new CPU or GPU. Everything is connected to a huge OLED panel (65″ or 77″) to display your games in the best possible quality. And of course, there’s plenty of Razer’s RGB Chroma lighting — it’s still a gaming PC, after all, even if it feels more like an office.
Of course, Razer’s history of flashy CES prototyping has been just that: a series of fictional one-off projects presented annually as an example of the potential of future PC gaming or gaming accessories that never turn out to be real products. Given Project Sophia’s illustrious display, it’s hard to imagine any other fate for the idea other than Razer’s product graveyard alongside previous shows such as 2014’s modular Project Christine, 2017, 2017’s three-screen Project Valerie, or 2018’s Project Linda Phone Link.
Standard computing devices are difficult. Even the fairly standardized world of building regular PCs is full of different specifications of solid state drives, motherboard sockets, and RAM. proprietary Systems are more difficult – remember Google’s ill-fated benchmark Ara smartphone project? The only way for something like Project Sophia to exist is if Razer was willing to build all the same units and accessories. And even if it was is being Willing to do so, it’s hard to imagine the cost would be astronomically lower, especially when compared to the perfectly practical alternative of “purchasing the regular accessories and making them sit at a regular desk”.
However, as with most Razer CES concepts, it’s still great to see that the company is ready to explore fanciful ideas like the future Project Sophia desk. Even in the likely situation where the concept of a computer desk never sees the light of commercial day, it shows that Razer is still willing to think outside the box when it comes to new designs and ideas. And who knows? Perhaps the future of computing is truly built in the office.
