After what feels like a decade of Instagram browsing chalk-colored living rooms with a sparse arrangement of regular candles and a coffee table book in a small spot, we’re having some fun with super design. And with a 5,000 percent increase in searches for “maximum interior design” over the past twelve months, it’s set to become a major trend for 2022.
An offshoot of cluttercore and cottagecore, which calls for an abundance of mismatched but meaningful objects, maximally embracing an abundance in color and size.
‘If stacked flowers and ornaments atop coffee tables aren’t for you,’ says Amy Wilson (amywilsoninteriors), interior designer for 247 Curtains, ‘maybe this season’s new alternative to extreme decor’ might appeal. More in terms of bold color blocking and paint effects – think clashing patterns in lines and geometry as well as incorporating larger, bolder accessories.
Remember, there are no rules when it comes to extreme decor, so have fun building your scheme for yourself. Think very boldly and bravely and you can’t go wrong too much…”
Maximum in the living room – be busy or be big
While strict rules are weak to the ground at the max, “busy or big work” is a good design principle to consider. Busy with patterned wallpaper, striped furniture, and piles of accessories, or get big by playing with the scale.
If busyness is more your thing, you can treat yourself to some elegant layers.
“Styling is a classic trick for extreme decor,” Amy says. The layered pattern, color, and furnishings add an element of intrigue and flattering. However, layers are so much more than decorating a plot full of treasures, it’s about layers you might not traditionally think of. For example, why not assemble carpets?
Or if you prefer to go big, choose fewer pieces but keep them big.
Maximizing it on a large scale rather than adding copious amounts of accessories and souvenirs will ensure maximum sentiment. Choose bulky light fixtures suspended from a dark ceiling for more drama, or a distinctive chair that plays with proportions that seem a little big for the space, adds Amy.
Maximum in the kitchen – ask for color
Oftentimes, we will default to white or gray in our kitchens, seeing them as functional spaces above everything else. But the extreme design rarely leaves anything one color.
Don’t be afraid to play with combinations you might not have thought of before. Try combining pastel colors like lilac and mint with a very bright base color. Taking this step further, try painting the inside and edges of the window frame a bright, contrasting color. To create a unique statement, try painting your ceiling in black and white stripes while incorporating a distinct color onto your walls. It’s time for courage!
Even if you choose a practical white base for your walls and floors, consider blue-painted shelves, green cabinets, or even a bright pink kitchen island…
Bedroom Maximum – Choose a Premium Bed
Create an ultimate edge for your bed by using bold upholstery, like the Liberty Pink Bed from DFS. Whether the maximum design principles will be applied in your WFH space, it all depends on how you work most efficiently. Some need an originally organized desk and muted colors to fully focus – if that’s the case, walk away.
However, what the extremes of in your home office can provide is plenty of inspiration, a bit of an escape from reality, and a visual break from tough intensity.

Maximum in the bathroom – embrace style
The basement toilet is a very popular place to implement an extreme interior, since it is usually a small and fairly unobtrusive space.
While the bathroom or shower, toilet, storage units, etc. are usually with practical and easy-to-clean finishes, give the bathroom walls and floors the most. Patterned wallpaper is a bathroom favorite—in fact, it was the biggest bathroom trend of 2021—or for something a little different, go the way Annie Sloan did with checkerboard floors. All styles are good style in extremes.
“Hexagons, zigzags, spots—any repeating pattern—all work well together for an extreme alternative pattern clash. Keep the color palette bold and bright to make the most of these patterns,” says Amy.
