Belfast – The Belfast Garden Club has donated 22 new books to the community this year, expanding the library book donation program to area schools for the first time.
“It is the hard work of over 100 members and the generosity of our community that allows us to give back in these ways,” said President Barb Gage. “Donating books to schools is in line with our goal of stimulating knowledge and a love of nature, and builds on our efforts to help support students in the school gardens.”
Books donated to the Belfast Community Outreach Program in Education will be used to start BCOPE’s gardening plans in 2022. Six new books include topics on floriculture, companion planting, tools and techniques for home and market gardening, and small-space gardening. , Books of flowers and planting vegetables. BCOPE’s goal is to have a self-sufficient garden that supplies the school kitchen with produce as well as the rest of the food for the students and teachers to use at home.
East Belfast and Nickerson Primary Schools also received two new books, “The Tree Book for Kids and Grownups” and “The Curious Garden”, as well as a $200 check for garden tools for the new garden program aimed at younger students.
The Belfast Free Library has received three new children’s books on topics such as foraging with children and exploring the diversity of life through science activities. Thirteen new adult-oriented books cover a wide range of topics from garden design to garden allies (insects, birds, etc.) to the coming apocalypse of insects, to garden art and bee identification. One focuses on making sintered flowers.
Favorites for co-lead writers Astrid Bowlby and Mary Davis are “Earth in Her Hands” by Jennifer Jewell and “The New Natural Nature: Designing and Planting an Ecologically Resilient Home Garden” by Kelly D. Norris.

In addition to donating books and supporting school garden projects, the Belfast Garden Club has planted trees and thousands of flowers in 12 public parks across the city and offers monthly horticultural and environmental programs open to all.
