With the COVID-19 pandemic production shutdown short-lived, and studios striking a deal with IATSE, thus avoiding a strike, a steady stream of TV series continues to emerge.
2022 looks set to be a remarkable year in TV, not only due to the continued expansion of Marvel Studios’ footprint on the medium with “Ms. Marvel” and “Moon Knight”, but also an expansion into the “Star Wars” universe with “Obi-Wan Kenobi”. Some series that were expected (or were simply hoped to) release in 2021, in fact, weren’t compressed before the end of the calendar year, leading to a bump in stacking in 2022. This includes everything from Amazon Prime’s video prequel. Lord of the Rings to Peacock’s “Bel-Air” and “Inventing Anna” on Netflix.
As you can see from the selection of titles above (and certainly from the longer list below), the genre series is more than just a New Year’s moment. The blast of content also includes Paramount Plus’s long-running adaptation “Halo,” as well as Netflix’s episodic horror anthology “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” and DC Comics’ latest series on the CW, “Naomi.”
If ditching headlines is your style, there are plenty of them to have fun with, too, including Hulu’s “Pam & Tommy” and “The Dropout.”
Likewise, there will be recognizable fare in new releases of modern classic titles, such as Netflix’s “That ’90s Show,” Hulu’s “How I Met Your Father,” and NBC’s revival of “Law & Order.”
