While wild planting is in fashion, bedding is unfashionable — Monty Donne criticized annuals and the RHS distanced itself from bedding plants, despite his role in Britain in Bloom, the community campaign associated with colorful hanging baskets. Under the new RHS “plant-friendly gardening” policy, BinB participants must show that they “give priority to pollinator-friendly or perennial plants where appropriate. If annual bedding is used, groups should consider its use and source.”

The Color Pantone has named Very Peri, a blue with shades of mauve and red (mainly purple) as the Color of the Year 2022. Nursery worker Martin Emmett suggests that Erysium ‘Bowles Mauve’ is a great example of a color-matching plant. Master gardener Jane Moore goes to ‘Six Hills Giant’ pollinator friend, while grower Adrian Bloom recommends Baptisia ‘Purple Smoke’ and ‘Seabrook’s Lavender’. Graham Spencer of Plants for Europe supports Nepeta grandiflora ‘Summer Magic’, which has excellent resistance to summer storms.

After many years of decline, interest in gardening clubs is growing — in Google searches, the term rose 3,400 percent in 2021. Veteran writer Peter Seabrook says the gardening community in his local village is discussing changing the name of the village’s gardening club. The old title, which has served the community for more than 100 years, clearly scares new young homeowners who are suddenly drawn to growth. The annual presentation schedule is also under examination. “Do we still need five seasons of onions,” Peter says, they ask, and why is the ruling “in line with RHS guidelines”? Now it comes to who can grow either the biggest potato, or the most fragrant flower, or the weirdest cactus, or the best bunch of salad leaves, simple things that everyone can enjoy.”
