With the demand for real estate booming, people looking to buy a home – or a second home – have countless things to consider including location, cost and of course style.
Real estate brokerage Redfin released a report this month that found the most popular home styles in the US, using home trends that list the data on its website.

The company found the 13 best home styles in the US for its report. At the top of the list were ranch-style homes, which have the highest sell-to-list ratio in Portland, Oregon, Phoenix, Chicago, San Francisco and San Diego, according to Redfin.
After the farmhouse style were Craftsman-style homes, contemporary-style homes, modernist-style homes and Cape Cod-style homes, and roughly for the top five styles.

1. Farmhouse style homes

According to a real estate brokerage, ranch-style homes are known as single-story homes. Homes – sometimes called “climbers” – usually have large windows, a low-pitched roof, and an open design.
2. Craftsman style homes

Redfin reports that distinguishing features of a Craftsman-style home include “shingles, steep low roofs, and screened front porches.” The style was popular in the 20th century, according to the company.
3. Contemporary style houses

According to Redfin, homes built in contemporary style often have open floor plans, large windows, and “inventive designs and simple shapes.” The company said that contemporary-style homes will sometimes feature eco-friendly components.
People sometimes use the terms “contemporary” and “modern” interchangeably, according to Redvin.

4. Modern style houses

Although modern style is similar to modern, modern style homes feature asymmetrical exteriors and flat roofs, Redvin reports.
According to the website, the modern architecture style became popular in the 1920s.
5. Cape Cod-style houses
Cape Cod-style homes are more commonly found in New England, according to Redvin. (istock)
Most common in the New England area of the United States, Cape Cod-style homes are recognizable by their symmetrical design, steeply pitched roofs, wooden sides, and shutters, according to Redfin.
The company stated that the architectural style dates back to 1675.
6. Colonial style houses

Although not as old as Cape Cod-style homes, the colonial-style homes have historical roots dating back to 1876, according to Redvin. The company reports that colonial-style homes tend to be two or three stories high, have brick or wood exteriors and “ornate entrances.”

7. Tudor style homes

Tudor-style homes are known for their striped exteriors, according to Redfin. The style also often includes a mixture of brick, stone and stucco.

8. Cottage Style Homes

According to Redfin, American architects began designing English-inspired cottages in the 1920s and 1930s.
The cottage style is marked by “a sloping thatched roof, arched doorways, shuttered windows, and a warm story character,” Redvin reports.
9. Mediterranean style houses

According to Redfin, Mediterranean-style homes are identified by their “low-pitched red tile roofs,” as well as the U-shaped floor plan and stucco or adobe.
The company found this style to be most popular in Southern California and Florida.
10. Farmhouse Style

Redfin reports that defining features of a ranch include wraparound porches, wood floors, and clapboard siding.
According to the company, the architectural style began in the early 18th century.

11. Mid-Century Modern Houses

According to Redfin, the modern architectural style began in the mid-century after World War II. The style often includes floor-to-ceiling windows and open layouts.
12. Victorian Houses
Victorian homes are popular in Boston and San Francisco, according to Redvin. (istock)
Redfin described the style of the Victorian home as “a colorful dollhouse with romantic and distinctive features.” According to the company, Victorian homes have “fine detailing,” gabled roofs, large windows, and a front porch. They often have a round tower.
According to Redfin, Victorian homes are popular in Boston and San Francisco.

According to Redfin, country houses originated in Europe and are mostly found in cities.
The real estate broker said that residential homes often have two or three stories, rooftop decks and spacious layouts.
