In 2020 and 2021, we’re all staying in our homes more than ever — and as a result, we’ve spent more time shopping for them. Stores across the United States have seen a double, and in some cases triple, increase in sales of household goods. It makes sense that homes and apartments are a place where we spend a small part of our lives and then suddenly become our place to work, relax and socialize safely. And then there’s the effect of the ongoing pandemic real estate boom: When people snap up places, well, in a place of shelter, they suddenly find themselves with rooms to fill.
But what exactly did people buy? We decided to ask several retailers, both big and small, for the products that flew off their shelves.
Some popular home decor trends have arisen: Comfort is paramount, as is beautifying outdoor spaces for safe summer gatherings. Mirrors continue to trend. People also want to discover and enjoy their own inner style: “We see customers highly interacting with some of our unique products as people reimagine their spaces, move into new homes, or simply continue to add curated pieces to their personal products,” says Sarah Khoja, Head of CB2 Product Development. This summer, we all felt sighs of relief and enjoyed the outdoors with more fun, more friends, more entertainment, and it shows in what people have been collecting.
