General planning and direction. The general site of the project is east of Shanghai Yangpu Bridge, which belongs to the southern part of Yangpu Riverfront. This area was originally called the “Yangzhoubo Industrial Belt” – an industrial agglomeration area south of Yangshubo Road, next to the Huangpu River, starting at Qinhuangdao Road in the west and ending at Liping Road in the east. From west to east, it spans six historic factories, namely, West Auxiliary Power Station Building, 9th National Cotton Factory, East Auxiliary Power Station Building, Shanghai Soap Factory, Yangshupu Coal Yard, and Gas Works. It covers an area of about 150,000 square meters and has about 1.2 kilometers of waterfront. As the birthplace of modern industry in Shanghai, the industrial zone along the river banks extends for tens of miles and has the characteristics of early time, multiple types, wide distribution, and large scale. The public space takes the dense industrial factory area (section 300-500m) as a design node, reflecting the demand for spatial diversity.

Following the completion of the Pudong Minsheng Wharf Reconnection project, three independent companies, Atelier Z+, Atelier Liu Yuyang Architects, and Atelier Deshaus, have been invited to participate in the initial planning and concept of the Yangpu River public space since 2018. Moreover, the organization of The joint working group in block mode, which was led by Atelier Z+ to complete the design of the entire process and the deep design of the section area. Ultimately, you hope to achieve limited intervention and low-impact development. With minimal manual intervention, the authenticity of industrial pavements is kept to the maximum. In addition to the overall planning and connection design, Atelier Liu Yuyang Architects is also responsible for the deep design and construction coordination of the East Auxiliary Power Building area on the banks of the Yangpu River.

Layou Design and Landscaping StrategyR. It is the former site of the Shanghai Power Station Auxiliary Equipment Works building. The design aims to preserve the wild nature, freshness, nature and changing character of the site by embracing the concept of limited nuisance. Existing eucalyptus trees are preserved and one of the former warehouses is being converted into an open cohabitation pavilion. The design also takes into account the historical texture of the site and introduces a system of pedestrian and bike paths. The newly built elements, Garden of Vestige, Meadow in Succession, and Eco Pond are established by historical monuments, the canal and building remain, and as the skeleton of the landscape. As a group, the site provides visitors with different touches of landscape when wandering inland, and together they make the eastern sanctuary an everyday landscape that not only serves as a riverside open space for city life, but also offers similar fun and diversity to the traditional gardens of the Yangtze River Delta.

Takaful suite. An old factory building of Shanghai Boiler Works (1953-1979) is set for demolition due to road planning. By analyzing the angle and direction of the planned traffic road, the design suggested retaining and enhancing half of the original building to form a unique structure and geometric condition. The roof has been opened to let in sunlight and allow new green plants to grow from the inside. Newly preserved and installed doors and windows, a children’s sandpit, and landscaping coteau make the entire structure complete. By preserving and restoring the original space and partial structure of the boiler works, the Pavilion of Symbiosis acts as a space open to all citizens, fusing together architecture, landscape, history and city.

Archeology Park. The demolished fragments of the original building have been reused to construct a wall representing the remains of the earlier sites. A natural slope and garden paths lead to the Garden of Vestige and the indoor office space turns into a garden space. The park is connected by riverside paths and offers views of the Huangpu Riverside and Yangpu Industrial District.

Meadow in the caliphate. Concrete block walls found in gabion baskets on the former site of the canal and factory buildings were built to represent the traces of the original factory building. The man-made meadow also encourages visitors to observe the growth and decay of plants and experience the four seasons of Shanghai.

Eco Bond. Applying sponge city techniques, Eco Pond collects rainwater from the site and connects to groundwater, and Eco Pond provides natural entrances to the Huangpu River for visitors to enjoy. It brought natural access between visitors and Huangpu River while providing the ground for recreational activities.
