Known for her dramatic contemporary schemes—often styled with splashes of bold color—and of course her collaborations with Farrow & Ball, Los Angeles-based interior designer Kelly Wearstler is also a fan of neutral interiors.
“A completely neutral room can still be a source of inspiration and depth,” she says, speaking exclusively H&G. Below, Kelly reveals how she uses neutral colors in her interior design projects. So, if you’re looking for neutral room ideas – or just advice on decorating in neutral colors, taking these expert tips on board will ensure you a professional level of success.

Whether you’re looking for neutral living room ideas or taking inspiration from transitional spaces, ‘it’s really important to consider texture, whether it’s a pattern, like jacquard weave in fabric, or blending textures, like a matte wall but says Kelly Wearstler: High gloss ceiling paint.
These elements help create the interest that will make a neutral, monochromatic room sing.
2. Add a splash of energy to the effect

“If someone wanted a very quiet room, I would tell you to completely stay in the neutral world with a monochromatic look,” says Kelly.
“However, if you want a splash of energy, add one gorgeous piece of art, or a colorful rug to create some interest and personality.”
3. Make sure the lighting is just right

“Lighting is really important to your neutral color selection,” Kelly Wearstler advises.
“If an area gets a lot of natural light, I tend to use light neutral shades, and enjoy beautiful shades that will pop throughout the day, creating another layer of texture.
“In rooms with limited natural light, the atmosphere is more natural, so dark neutrals can be really effective.”
4. Bring neutrals to the bathroom

Many rooms go with the neutral theme, but since neutral colors are so relaxing, I especially love the master bathroom’s monochromatic neutral design. You’ll feel fresh, clean, and balanced,” advises Kelly.
