Text description provided by the architects. This project is an old house reconstruction project located in Xiaohuangpu Old Community, Ronggui, Shunde County. The owner is a professional painter, and this is a family of three. The original intention of the owner was to move away from the snowy commercial house and build a cozy home with studio, pottery, plants and pets to meet the needs of everyday life. Functional areas of the building: the first floor contains a dining room, a Chinese and Western kitchen, a courtyard, and a space for burning pottery; The second floor is the living room, guest room and laundry space. The third floor is the master bedroom and the children’s bedroom, and the fourth floor is the studio.

The relationship between the building and its surroundings. The project is located in an old community developed in the seventies and eighties, the road is narrow, the distance of the neighboring buildings is narrow. There is no safe distance from the neighboring houses. At the same time, as society aged, most of the original old neighbors were gone, and many old homes were vacant or rented to immigrant workers. The surrounding population is relatively mobile, so the owners also want to fully consider the issue of safety.

Therefore, on the ground floor of the building adjacent to the street, a high side window and a glass door facing the courtyard were adopted as the main way of lighting, effectively blocking the view of pedestrians on the street of the ground floor. The living room on the second floor has a floor-to-ceiling window facing the west garden to ensure good daylight, which is the main daylight. Using the calculation of the road distance and the height of the first layer, let the living room retreat inward what distance is the width of the balcony, to avoid the line of sight of people on the streets to see the life of the residents, so that pedestrians can only see the consolation of smallpox in the living room when they walk there.

The relationship between the building and sunlight. Due to the rectangular topography of the building, its depth is about 13 meters. Below the second floor, except for the front and west facade of the facade, the other facades are mainly connected to the neighbours. In order to avoid most of the lighting will be blocked in the future due to the reconstruction of the surrounding buildings. The central area of the building is designated as the main vertical traffic, and all placements except for stairs and corridors are converted into empty spaces. Combined with the corresponding skylights on the roof, light can be irradiated into the space from the central part of the building to increase the interior natural lighting. At the same time, the living room faces the west side, using a different angle of the winter and summer sun path, the living room receded again to the balcony position, so that there is no direct summer sunlight into the living room, and in winter, you can enjoy the warm afternoon sun.

The relationship between building and landscape. Since there is no good landscaping around the project, the designer wanted to create some landscaping inside the building. First of all, the ground floor recedes inward, and the courtyard space is expanded to meet the owner’s daily gardening and dining needs. The second and third floors make use of the central empty space and the location of the staircase to grow indoor plants as a space for indoor landscaping. Residents can enjoy nature in the living room all the time. Skylights and large glass windows on the fourth floor produce the best views of the sky.

The relationship between the building and the people. To increase the communication between the people who live in this building and to prevent the spaces on each floor from separating, in the design the overlapping floors and the empty space are combined together between the second floor to the fourth floor. On the one hand, people can see each other on each floor. On the other hand, by 1.5 times the floor height, the space perception of the living room is improved and large paintings can be hung in the studio. The air pressure difference created by the vacuum and split, the windows at different heights, and the differences in indoor temperatures strengthen the indoor airflow and make the space more airy and breathable in the meantime.

Finally, the purpose of the reconstruction project is to make the people who live here feel safe, secure and feel nature at any time, improve the comfort of living through sunlight and air flow, and constantly improve the relationship between the people who live here through the continuous interaction in space.
