Populous has been announced as the designer of the new Internazionale Milano and AC Milan football club that will take place in the city’s San Siro district, marking another banner year in which he reformed a living legend and inaugurated the Field of Dreams.
Dubbed the “Cathedral”, the new facility will replace the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza that has been on the site since its completion in 1926.
The stadium will be the centerpiece of a pedestrian-friendly recreational area featuring 110,000 square meters of green space as well as a new underground parking facility. Popoulos says the final design will be revealed at the conclusion of the accelerated second phase at the end of next year, and that it will be a celebration of some of the city’s most famous architecture, including the famous Duomo and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele.
“Our design envisions the stadium as the most sustainable in Europe and the focal point of a new sports and entertainment district in Milan that will remain alive all year long,” said Declan Sharkey of Populus Italia in a statement. “Building on the history and traditions of these two great clubs, it will not only provide a great sports arena for watching football in the region, but will invigorate the entire region to better serve Milan’s citizens, visitors, fans and their families.”
