Text description provided by the architects. Studio David Elgrabli has created inviting design and a small bakery that provides a welcoming charm and elegant appeal with this low-cost project. Thanks to the bold relationship with light and color, the 45 square meter bakery stands out as a compelling addition to the famous neighborhood. The space was created for Jerusalem’s second location, The Dough House, a family-owned bakery and café that opened in the heart of the city’s food and cultural district, Mahane Yehuda Market. In such a competitive area, a storefront has to be eye-catching while also appetizing, and bold while being comforting.
This eye-catching storefront design uses natural letterforms and cheerful green that is carried across the entire space. It also features bi-colored glass windows that are the focal point of the design, creating interesting reflections of the exterior and striking chromatic effects of the interior. Once inside, the bakery’s design focuses on maintaining a sterile atmosphere, complete with white tiled walls and cabinets – almost looking like a confectionery drugstore. Terrazzo molding visually softens the floor but maintains a healthy appeal, just as the Statuario marble cashier counter provides another clean visual anchor.
The bakery offers bread, cake, and pastries to customers, allowing them to choose items in an open presentation. The design encourages this with multiple layers and different heights of custom joinery that invites exploration, all made using natural materials and colors. This design allows the eye to discover baked goods in an exciting atmosphere, while ensuring the safety and confidence of a healthy look.
Green walls and innovative lighting balance this cleanliness with a family-owned business narrative and contemporary vibe. This is achieved through a natural flair delivered in a modern setting. Using bi-colored glass, the shop front windows capture sunlight and open it up to rainbow patterns throughout, providing a changing array of colors that create spontaneity and excitement. The brushed aluminum ceiling helps continue the path and effect of bold natural light by enhancing reflections, enhancing a clean aesthetic, and amplifying both ends of the design requirements. Depending on the hour of the day, the dramatic effect of the windows changes, giving the entire space a link to the rhythms of the sun.
This relationship with the environment is enhanced by a selection of natural materials. The floor space provides visitors with custom-made light oak joinery and decorated with plants. Besides the green walls and storefronts, the overall effect is an eccentric refinement that integrates seamlessly with a commitment to cleanliness. Set within the Mahane Yehuda Market, The Dough House is an imaginative and evocative space that elegantly integrates ideals of indulgence and cleanliness without splitting the difference. They maintain the expectation of hospitality and a healthy place to find baked goods, accomplished with a feel of play and delivered within a reasonable budget.
