A piece of New York City history is also one of its most recent residential addresses.
Wells, formerly Wells Hotel, is a 10-story conversion project in the historic Carnegie Hill district of Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The Paris-based cabinet of Alberto Pinto was behind the design of the apartment building, with New York-based Adellco as the developer.
Originally opened in 1901, the building was designed by architect Louis Korn. As part of its renovation, the neo-Renaissance facade of brick and stone was restored, as well as the cornices and window surrounds.
“This is a very unique building, in and of itself, due to its gorgeous architecture and step back from another era… Being vacant inside gave us the opportunity to completely remodel an interior with a sophisticated and elegant design by Cabinet Alberto Pinto,” Matthew Adele, President of Adellco, told Mansion Global. “At the same time, it’s 100% modern, from the mechanics to the finishes.”
Mr Adele said the Alberto Pinto Cabinet, founded by the late Alberto Pinto, would also recreate the building’s promenade. It was removed at one point, leaving behind a brick wall. This wall was demolished, and the team worked with the Historic District on plans to return the building to something close to its original design.
“The original design had a dramatic frieze that tops the building,” he said. “As cool as it is now, this cornice will be the equivalent of the cherry on top and will define the building in a way that hasn’t been defined for decades.”

The project is set to bring 20 two-bedroom to four-bedroom residences in the area, including a five-bedroom penthouse. Prices range from $3.85 million for a two-bedroom apartment to $7.42 million for a four-bedroom home.
The residences will have herringbone oak floors, marble bathrooms, custom kitchens with whitewashed cabinets, crystal gray calcite countertops, and appliances that include a water filtration system and wine storage.
Expected to launch next month, the penthouse will feature a wraparound balcony, a separate rooftop terrace with an outdoor kitchen and fireplace, and a private elevator. It also boasts views of the city and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir in Central Park. The price has not yet been announced.
Amenities in the building will include a marble-and-granite-clad lobby, fireplace, antique mirror, and custom brass chandelier, as well as a custom-designed desk by Pinto, according to the developer. There will also be a gym with equipment by Peloton and NordicTrack, a pet spa, concierge and concierge services.
Mr Adele said the first Wales residents are expected to move in at the end of 2022.
Adellco acquired the property at the end of 2018 for $56.25 million, according to PropertyShark records. The hotel closed in early 2020.
