Text description provided by the architects. Located in a high-end residential development, Gable House has been designed to appear camouflaged in its environment. Although it is located close to urban public infrastructure and a community of low-density housing, it fits perfectly into the high-quality natural urban environment. Local regulations influenced many aspects of the design including height restrictions, material choices, color scheme, open space ratio, and roof shape. The warm gray tiles covering the gable roof structure provide the main exterior visual impact and a sense of harmony with the surroundings. Its name, “Gable House,” is derived from the roof’s more visually distinct shape.
the outside – The specific challenge for the design of this house was to create and develop the design in the direction of Thai modern architecture, keeping in mind the symbols of the local community. Thus, the designer focused on implementing tropical and sophisticated modern Thai design concepts. The central courtyard design embodies the traditional Thai house and leads to a creative blend of the positive spaces of the geometric building and the negative space of the central pool. The design of this “C” shaped block effectively allows natural light and ventilation into the home’s interior.
The rafters on the ceiling of the drop-off area and the main entrance are designed to be a figurative “red carpet” that leads into the main area of the house. This, along with the effect of the “stone tunnel” as the corridor runs through a series of halls, creates a stunning welcome. This dramatic image and contrast between light and dark, is the main visual impact of this house. The gentle lightness at the end of the clip is particularly successful in terms of orientation and sense of direction. Moreover, this mysterious entrance creates an exciting sense of journey and impending discovery along the way.
On the second floor, the wood vents act as a double veneer that provides a sense of privacy, especially when the neighbors are in close proximity. Openings accentuate the gable shape to give a unique character and create an eye-catching front facade while harmonizing with the surrounding large trees and other vertical elements. Another focal point of the house is the spacious covered porch area which provides a space to relax before entering the main living space. The connection of openings around the Western-style kitchen at the end of the pool facilitates the openness and smooth boundaries that make these functional spaces adaptable and flexible.
The gray-green volcanic stone is one of the main elements and creates a sense of solidity at the base of the house. In contrast to the stone, there are freestanding teak poles and panels which are an adaptation of the vocabulary of a traditional Thai home. These provide a touch of softness and subtlety for exploring materials in a gable house.
interior – The interior design concept was to create a fully functional main house with the atmosphere of a vacation home. A comfortable environment that meets all the requirements of the residents’ daily lifestyle has been achieved through a coherent architectural design. The aesthetics of the interior and exterior spaces of this modern tropical home are combined by applying a similar color scheme to different materials, or by using the same materials in both the indoor and outdoor spaces. The unique flooring patterns and four-meter-high hallway continue towards the main staircase, creating a stunning entrance to the house. This is heightened by a transparent glass lift in the double height space.
Moving on from the interior, the high ceilings continue into the living and dining areas. Floor-to-ceiling glazing creates a warm and relaxing indoor and outdoor ambiance. The main pantry is another great space, with a view of the pool and an eight-meter counter extending from the main dining area. This pantry also serves to support outdoor activities and recreation. On the second floor, the main private area is designed using different materials and color scheme to differentiate them from each other and create some dynamics. The spacious dressing room is divided into a dressing room and one for her which is combined with the bedroom and offers views of the pool and garden. 4 additional bedrooms for the family are designed in different and coordinated styles.
