After an architect in Chicago for a day
This video follows Heba Bhatti, an architect on the Valerio Dewalt Train in Chicago, during a day at work. An architect’s day-to-day activities can sometimes seem vague. This is likely due to the fact that there is no truly “typical” day. Building design goes through multiple stages, each with very different responsibilities.
Today, Heba is working on submissions from the contractor, specifically the door schedule. She has to check to make sure the contractor has counted every door within a 500 room student housing project. This task can be quite boring, so Heba also takes us to a recently completed project and looks at what it was like today for the different phases of that project as well. If you are interested in becoming an architect, looking to join the workforce, or just interested in seeing how architecture firms operate, this video provides access to their daily inner workings.

Stuart Hicks is an architecture design educator who leads studios and lectures as an associate professor at the University of Illinois School of Architecture at Chicago. He also serves as Associate Dean in the School of Architecture, Design, and Arts and is the co-founder of the Design With Company practice. His work has won awards such as the Vanguard Design Award for the Architectural Record or the Young Architect’s Forum Award and has appeared in exhibitions such as the Chicago Biennial of Architecture and Design Miami, as well as at the Victoria and Albert Museum and Tate Modern in London. His writing can be found in the co-authored book, The Misguided Tactics of Fit Calibration, published with the Graham Foundation, as well as articles in MONU, the AIA Journal Manifest, Log, bracket, and the guest-edited issue of MAS Context on the topic of character architecture.
