Text description provided by the architects. Channeling the spirit of this mid-century modern home’s original designer, Josef Escherek, was a primary goal of this comprehensive contemporary transformation. Nestled among much larger homes in the Pacific Heights area of San Francisco, this project adapts the original design to its current context. The new design center is a large multi-storey indoor garden lobby that aims to capture the outdoor space within the house.
This highly lit space acts as a spatial hub, pulling daylight into the home’s interior. It features a cross bridge and a carved wooden wall that filters and etches light as it moves through the space.
The dialogue between earth and sky is enhanced by the house’s palette of materials composed of concrete, wood, glass, steel and diffused light. The entire interior of the house has been altered with bound materials that reflect, refract and sculpt light as it is captured. The juxtaposition of heavy and light is carried out in the smallest detail. In addition to this lobby space, the house re-establishes its relationship to the landscape via its back facade. The new lower level physically connects the interior of the house to the outdoor living space and landscape. The rear facade and adjacent walls redirect both the interior and exterior space towards the landscape and the cityscape beyond while modifying the adjacent structures for mutual privacy.
