SINGAPORE – With the COVID-19 pandemic effectively ramping up interior design concerns such as creating flexible workspaces, this year’s Singapore Interior Design Awards (SIDA) saw awards for Best Pandemic Design for the first time.
Eight such awards were given, and a proposed collaboration between JIA Studios, Pod Structures and The CHA Project received the Gold Award in the Concept category for a modular, free-standing shelter unit for people displaced or affected by the epidemic.
In the youth category, Temasek Polytechnic Student Rachel Teo received a gold award for transforming the Golden Mile Food Center along Beach Road into an urban kampung.
“As designers who design our homes, public spaces, and work spaces, you have a critical role to play in the aesthetics and functionality of the spaces in which we work, live and play, but now also to weather the changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Second Minister for National Development Indrani Raja, who He was the guest of honor at the Awards Ceremony held at the Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore on Friday (December 17).
“I am pleased to see that the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) has decided to honor those who have thought about designing a pandemic, by offering the best solutions in the category of pandemic design solutions.”
Top Winners at the Awards Ceremony
Renowned interior designer Peter Tay, acclaimed Chinese designer Chris Lin, and Singaporean design firm Index Design were awarded the highest honors at SIDA, which has seen 84 awards awarded in 10 categories, and attracted over 400 entries from 10 countries.
The award for Best Design Company went to Index Design, which was represented by its innovative works such as The Glades at Bedok Rise, Yishun Community Hospital, and Social Kitchen in OUE Downtown.
Lin was the top winner with four awards: Best in Design of Public Spaces: Civic and Cultural (Gold and Bronze), Best in Design of Public Spaces: Leisure and Leisure (Bronze) and Best in Exhibition Design: Developer Sales Show (recall honorary) – and an award The best of the best.
Tay, who has designed the homes of celebrities such as Zhang Ziyi, Wang Leehom, Stephanie Sun, and Zoe Tay, has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award, which honors interior designers who have demonstrated a long track record of producing quality work.
This year the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) also marks the 27th anniversary of the Singapore Interior Designers Association. In November, the association launched the Singapore Interior Design Accreditation Scheme to further professionalize the industry by raising qualifications.
