City of Madelia unveils design concept for new government center

MADELIA, MN (KEYC) – City of Madelia officials said they plan to open the new government center, which will be the new home to the city’s city hall and police and fire departments, in the fall of 2022.

This project has been in the works for some time.

“It’s very exciting to have this opportunity to become available. It’s been so long and this isn’t an overnight plan, we’ve been doing it for over 10 years, I would say,” Madelia City Manager Kristen Fisher.

“The current facility we are using has actually been in use to house horse drawn hardware for over 100 years. Our firehouse was built in the early 1950s so we are 70 years old and it would be nice to have space to work on the hardware And to be able to grow with the community,” explained Madelia Fire Chief Ryan Fisher.

The new building will be located at the intersection of Drew Street and Main Street, which will benefit everyone involved, especially the police department.

“Now we’re on the back side of a downtown alley. So right now, it’s not really clear and open. If people are looking for the emergency police and they come into town and find us, they’re going to have a much easier time,” said Rob Preacher, the Madelia Police Chief. “.

The old nature of the building is not the only reason to leave.

“If anyone goes to Madelia, they know how crowded Main Street is, and for safety reasons, we need to leave Main Street,” Fisher said.

On the plus side, it will add another storefront to Madelia’s thriving downtown sprawl.

“We have not lost business, we have not lost manpower. The building is available and we will rebuild. We will open this site for EDA development,” Fisher added.

The new government center is more than just a new space coming into town.

“With it being a growing community, I think this is only the next step in its growth. It is something that I think the community will be proud of for generations to come,” Fisher commented.
