Interestingly, De Tomaso was known for his collaborative efforts, prior to his bankruptcy in 2004. The iconic De Tomaso Pantera was a European dream that flaunted American lines and Ford muscles. This was all the work of Argentine Alejandro de Tomaso, who wanted to make powerful sports cars. The collaborative spirit remains at the automaker’s roots! Di Tommaso collaborated with German motorsport magicians Capricorn Group. The P72 is being built at an entirely new co-branded facility in the Nürburgring.
How cool is it to take your car through the backyard for a test? And how cool it would be if that backyard were the same Nürburgring! This joint effort has already sowed its seeds, as the P72 supercar gets a redesigned chassis and all-new suspension geometry. Aerodynamic efficiency is also tested and improved in Toyota’s popular Gazoo Racing Europe wind tunnel. Don’t worry, De Tomaso has vowed not to mess with his fancy design language.

Di Tommaso joins the Jedi group to build the P72 supercar
De Tomaso has teamed up with popular motorsport component developer Capricorn Group, which is best known for helping develop the Porsche 919 LMP1 dominating Le Mans. These guys are the goats when it comes to racing and have helped several OEMs build iconic machines. This strategic collaboration will be a turning point for De Tomaso’s current and upcoming projects.
The beautiful P72 Supercar, which was due to be launched in 2022, has been pushed forward by several major developments and engineering changes, thanks to the Capricorn range. This German entity will not take care of all the mechanical and aerodynamic needs of the long-awaited revival car De Tomaso.
The Capricorn set has a new chassis and suspension system
The first major upgrade comes in the form of a redesigned carbon fiber body that maintains the FIA’s homologation standards. Also, Capricorn Group designed an all-new suspension system for the P72 supercar. The main purpose is to improve safety and lower the supercar’s center of gravity. Other changes also include an improved interior space and a solid chassis thanks to a redesigned chassis.
The first set of prototypes is being built as we speak and will be used for various purposes including crash testing and real-world calibration. All of these major changes coincide with the overall aerodynamic upgrades that De Tomaso and Capricorn Group are also working on.
De Tomaso P72 will undergo serious atmospheric testing in Toyota’s famous wind tunnel
The car was actually built using computational fluid dynamics, but De Tomaso went further. The P72 supercar is being tested at the Toyota Gazoo Racing Europe wind tunnel in Cologne. This is where aggressive F1 and WEC cars are honed to aerodynamic perfection. Minor modifications are made to the exterior body panels and an overhaul under the chassis is underway, and a full-size model is being tested.
Fortunately, the beautiful design language will not be tampered with
The P72 looks absolutely fantastic and we would fall apart, like all of you, if De Tomaso and Capricorn Group planned to change the exterior design for aerodynamic efficiency. They know this very well, which is why the P72 will not get any major modifications to the exterior design. Instead, the team is focusing on the underside of the car to adjust and improve on the air as much as possible. So, don’t worry about ugly partitions and big wings ruining Joywn Wong’s beautiful artwork.
De Tomaso P72 will be built in the Nürburgring in a new co-branded facility
The P72 is a very fortunate car that has the privilege of actually building it on the track. The collaboration between De Tomaso and Capricorn Group has given way to a completely new facility being built in the Nürburgring. Yes! The track is only in her backyard! The P72 Supercar will be handcrafted at this plant, and Capricorn Group will monitor its development closely.
We also know that the P72 was to be manufactured in the United States. But it was De Tomaso’s collaboration with the Capricorn Group that made her switch to Germany. But plans for the American facilities would not be a dead end, as Di Tomaso emphasized on the development of things in North America as well, over the years. The P72 will have no changes to its powertrain setup and will carry a 5.0-liter Coyote V8 with ROUSH Performance’s supercharged design.
Delivery of this art on wheels will start from mid-2023
With everything in full swing, the De Tomaso P72 is slated for delivery from mid-2023. Only 72 units of this great-looking supercar will be built, sure to give the likes of Pagani a shot at artistic appeal. It will be a wonderful fusion of technological marvel and handcrafted allure.
