Colleague gifts
Try the decoration game. Hang secure, lightweight ornaments on walls, doors, mirrors, or all of the above. Bring a small tree or candlestick that can be lit by battery power or plugged in. Focus on lightweight ornaments, which are easier to hang and are safer if they fall. Try plastic or gel window coverings for windows and mirrors.
Create a welcome campaign. Families can decorate the door facing the driveway for all to see. Try durable wrapping paper designed specifically for wrapping doors. Use a wreath hanger to hang a welcome wreath or mark the door for all to see.
How about a flash memory! Print snapshots of favorite photos of the year to mount on your walls. Or create a memory book for the year. This gives your friend or family member a chance to socialize by inviting people to view photos and showing the book to staff and other residents in other parts of the nursing home. Families find that the ability to view physical images of their surroundings is very useful for residents of nursing homes, and it can help those who struggle with failed memories refresh their minds daily.
warm gifts
People become less tolerant of cold as they age due to normal age-related changes (for example, loss of fat under the skin’s surface), or due to health problems such as diabetes. Warm someone up for the holidays! The blankets in most nursing homes tend to be thin. A comforter or two is a great gift. Nothing says, “This is mine, not yours” louder than a bright plaid blanket. Make it colorful so that it is easy to identify. Other families chose to have a cover photo using an image that the resident finds meaningful.

Many families love giving gifts that create an experience. Some families offer an essential oil diffuser to change the mood in that bedroom. Sometimes food is sent to friends who live far away once a month (check with the nurse for dietary restrictions).
