New Life Saving Club in Emu Park in Australia<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

Designed with harsh coastal conditions in mind, Australia’s new Emu park lifesaving club features a range of practical construction techniques that reduce the need for maintenance and daily costs. Local firm Design + Architecture led the project and worked closely with the club to create a stylish, modern and accessible boat shed. While it is smaller in size, the new spatial design and choice of building materials respond better to current use.<\/p>\n

Elevate access, ventilation, storage and material selection<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n
In line with the customer’s desire to reduce maintenance needs, the <\/span>Architects<\/span><\/strong> Address four design weaknesses: access, ventilation, storage, and materials. To start, they modified the ship’s existing footprint to provide handicapped toilet access and new female\/male utility complexes. Furthermore, the new design has several revolving doors on three sides, providing flexible access to the boat shed and separating panel users from vehicles\/trailers\/boats. These doors also maximize airflow and natural light, even in the closed position, thanks to their perforated surfaces. Speaking of airflow, the damaged and leaky concrete ceiling was replaced with higher ceilings and skylights to provide ventilation and permanent natural lighting.<\/span><\/div>\n

In general, the simplified footprint, albeit smaller, allows for better use of the vessel, and therefore more efficient storage. Completing the improved design is a smart choice of low-maintenance materials that will save cost and withstand sea conditions. c<\/span>Building materials mainly consist of concrete blocks, wood and aluminum sheets. Extensive design decisions have been made to avoid any materials that may rust or require maintenance such as steel or glass, <\/span><\/em>Expands Design + Architecture. <\/span><\/p>\n
