For many office workers, it comes down to the grind. But she didn’t exactly return to the office. And it probably won’t be.<\/p>\n
We are approaching two years since COVID-19 forced the work-from-home revolution as governments asked people to stay away from public places to slow the spread of the disease.<\/p>\n
Even as the outbreak waned \u2014 and in states and territories that barely required restrictions and lockdowns \u2014 workers largely refused to return to work desks full-time.<\/p>\n
Companies may want to force their workforce back into the 2019 straight-jacket 9-5, Monday through Friday, at the office.<\/p>\n
But with so much work pressure on employers – making it a selling market for people interested in a new job – that’s not going to happen.<\/p>\n

No more than 60 percent of jobs can be done from home. But many can.(News letters<\/span><\/span><\/span>)<\/cite><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nIf you are one of the millions of frontline workers who need to be physically in your workplace to do your job, your life probably won’t change much.<\/p>\n
For that vast majority, the only change they’ll likely see are crowded suburban cafes, more people plowing the lunchtime walking path and crazy urban congestion as people stay close to where they started the day.<\/p>\n
But about 35 percent of jobs have aspects that allow them to be done at home, according to a report from the Productivity Commission, a government think tank. The types of jobs tend to be better paying and more likely to be full-time, as workers tend to be female.<\/p>\n\n\n
Although it has some drawbacks, most office workers are drawn to working from home two or three days a week.(Adobe: Ilona<\/span><\/span><\/span>)<\/cite><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nFor these people – a large proportion of the masses that streamed through our central business districts every day in pre-COVID times – the office is now just one place where they can work.<\/p>\n
It is not particularly attractive.<\/p>\n
We did this<\/h2>\n Australians love to present an image of countryside charm and rugged adventure, but the truth is we are one of the most urbanized countries on Earth.<\/p>\n
Our three largest cities – Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane – are as big or as big as the national capitals like Madrid, Berlin and Amsterdam, but without the underground rail, dense living, 20-minute villages and infrastructure that makes them work.<\/p>\n
As a result, the fringes of the ever-burning city provide the only affordable housing. But so far they have been largely dormitories, with no jobs.<\/p>\n

The HILDA (Family, Income and Work Dynamics in Australia) survey is an epic research project from the University of Melbourne examining how we live our lives.<\/p>\n
It wouldn’t surprise you to find a long commute to work hits people’s satisfaction with their jobs.<\/p>\n
\u201cThose who spend a significant amount of time commuting to and from work each day are more likely to be dissatisfied with their jobs in general, as well as with their working hours, flexibility in balancing work and non-work obligations, and salaries,\u201d the book states.<\/p>\n
Here’s the kicker.<\/p>\n
“In addition, people with a longer daily commute are more likely to expect to leave their job in the next 12 months than those who spend less time getting to and from work.”<\/p>\n
no shock<\/h2>\n That brings us to now: office workers start logging in again, sneaking into the office after the Christmas and New Year holidays.<\/p>\n
Since the beginning of the pandemic, surveys of office workers have been remarkably consistent. Most of them like to work two or three days a week in the office. Some want zero, others five, but most want two or three. They will likely get their wish.<\/p>\n
Noisy lobbyists from the real estate industry have been vocal in calling on public servants to force them back into the office, to revitalize the faltering CBD.<\/p>\n
Fun, isn’t it? The Public Service is a big boss, with just over two million employees in the Commonwealth, state and local government across the country.<\/p>\n
But this does not exceed 2 million out of the 13 million employees in the state, and most public employees work in health and education (hospitals and schools) outside the center of major cities.<\/p>\n
What the big owners want is to see the people in the city. But they know that private sector employers cannot and will not force a newly empowered workforce – with increased employee demand – back into the office against their will.<\/p>\n\n\n

Push hard to get employees back in the office and workers will pay back: Calculate when moving to a higher paying job that promotes access to flexible work.<\/p>\n
