When designing her clients’ Prospect Heights home, designer Keren Richter says her goal was “to create a warm and inviting interior that complements the home’s modern finishes—matte white oak floors, white marble, black-finished metalwork, and walnut cabinetry.”
Richter adds that she found design inspiration from Raymond Saunders’ large palette of the homeowners and its “dark colors and red accents.”
The end result is a cottage filled with furnishings by a bevy of independent designers, as well as some contemporary pieces, vintage lighting and furniture, as a way to support the client’s existing collection of art and ceramics. The home’s furnishings, on the other hand, are a mixture of jewel tones “complemented by grand gestures and greenery that emphasizes the ceiling heights and natural light of the house.”
In the end, Richter says she and her design team “achieved a dynamic feel by combining darker finishes with reflective brass accents and often cool geometric silhouettes to complement natural, natural textures.”

Living room

In this home’s double-height living room is an oversized tree, intended to complement the space’s large skylight. “The 10-foot tall tree towers over the Four Hands cane cabinet and adds a major sculptural gesture,” Richter said. “We paired the Highland House blue velvet tuxedo sofa with custom woven artwork created by Thompson Street Studio and a coffee table from Croft Home.”

“Our clients have inherited a large-format oil painting by Raymond Saunders, and its scale and color scheme inspired the rich tones of their dining room,” Richter explains. This space also features a custom flatwoven Moroccan rug by RRESS and a white oak dining table inspired by Axel Einer Hjorth.

With plenty of windows in the dressing area/sitting room, there is no shortage of natural light here. Plus, this pocket features a wall of storage, thanks to the reformer cabinetry created in collaboration with Muller Van Severen, which features “a prominent brass kick and components.” There’s also a hand-hanging lamp by WeraJane and a wool rug from Cold Picnic, which, Richter says, add “fun color and great detail.”

Dark blue floor-to-ceiling window treatments are a focal point in the basic bedroom, which is complemented by an emerald green Paavo Tynell pendant light, as well as a custom walnut floating nightstand and pendant lights by Buster and Punch.
